Pune:A labourer sold off her ornaments and borrowed money from relatives to raise Rs 6.30 lakh so that she can claim her lottery ticket of Rs 18.85 lakh.

Laxmi Kamble, 34, of Gultekdi, lodged a complaint with the Swargate police after she realized she has been duped.

Senior inspector Deepak Nikam said that a man called Kamble on her cellphone on March 1 to tell her that she has won a lottery of Rs 18.85 lakh. The caller asked her to deposit a specific sum in a bank account to claim the prize money.

Between March 1 and November 8, Kamble deposited varying amounts with several account, but got only assurances in return, not the money. "Initially, Kamble deposited a specific amount in the bank. But every time the person would give her excuses for not paying the prize money. Instead, he would ask her to deposit more money in different bank accounts," Nikam said. Kamble sold off her ornaments and borrowed money from relatives to raise Rs 6.30 lakh. But finally she had to approach the police.

The police have booked 15 suspects under section 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code. "We have checked the bank accounts in which Kamble deposited the money. The accounts were traced to Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. The suspects have already withdrawn the money," Nikam said.
